What is a problem statement?

Problem Statements should be written as briefs and should not exceed one page of content and one page of contacts.

Components of a Problem Statement

  • Problem title

    • Short, catchy title describing the challenge (fewer than 10 words).

  • Sponsoring organization

    • Organization of the sponsor.

  • Challenge:

    • A one-sentence description of the problem, without prescribing a solution.

  • Relevant context

    • Basic facts or context required to understand the problem.

    • An anecdote of a time this problem occurred.

    • An attempt to solve this problem that failed.

    • A relevant current event.

  • Impact

    • A to-the-point description of the larger effect of solving this problem.

  • Potential beneficiaries

    • A list of end-users or people who feel the pain of this problem on a regular basis.

  • Team recommended skill sets

    • A list of suggested skill sets that may be helpful to have on the team to have a successful project.

  • Resources (optional)

    • Links to any material that may help the students gain context and start the conversation with the sponsor.

  • Contact information

    • Problem Sponsor

      • The Problem Sponsor acts as both client and liaison, owning the problem the students are trying to solve and guiding their proposed solution while also facilitating their investigation into its root causes. They play an active role during the course.

    • Senior Leader

      • This is someone in a leadership position who is aware that the problem sponsor is working with a student team and supports the process.

    • Cleared contacts for interviews

      • Much of the program's success hinges on the team being able to "hit the ground running" by immediately speaking to people who experience this problem. By including a list of contacts for the team, your problem gets a strong start at the beginning of the semester and can be pushed closer to a solution throughout the semester.
