We live in a time of significant change, uncertainty, and challenge for Western values and political systems stemming from the rise of authoritarian regimes both militarily and economically. The pacing threat for this challenge is China given its economic growth and military modernization. China’s rise as a strategic competitor to Western values, international rules and norms, stability, and security across the globe is a reminder that the West’s experiment in democracy is not a given and should not be taken for granted. We must protect free peoples and free systems.
